Our Thinking

A note from Michael on choosing names worth building on, and the place CreateMySign.com has in that work.

I built PremiumBrands.com around names I would be willing to use myself. The collection gives founders a place to consider a name alongside the business they want to build, while the choice is still theirs to make. CreateMySign.com belongs here because it gives sign-making work a direct, customer-centered introduction. I can picture it on an estimate for the first job and on the workshop door years later.

The morning a different name changed the introduction

In 2007, I acquired the press release distribution business operating on i-Newswire.com. I secured iNewswire.com in 2013, but kept looking at Newswire.com as the name that fit the business I wanted to build. Getting there took more than a year of negotiation. Before making the move, I also consulted SEO professionals so the change would be considered carefully.

We moved the business to Newswire.com in February 2015. That morning, a prospect told one of our sales agents, “Oh yeah, Newswire.com. I’ve heard of you guys.” They could not have known us by that name. We had only just started using it. I still remember the exchange because it captured something I had been working toward: a clearer introduction before the sales conversation had even begun.

In 2022, the business was acquired for about $44 million by Issuer Direct, a price for the business and the team’s work, not for the domain. By then it had spent more than seven years introducing itself as Newswire.com.

Choosing before the whole plan is ready

I bought PremiumBrands.com before I had a plan for it. Premium names matter to me, and I believed waiting would probably cost me the chance to use this one. By now it could belong to an end user building on it, with no interest in selling. Having the name gave me a place to develop my thinking and eventually a clear home for this collection.

My test for another name is simple: would I build on this? The ones I have not built on yet are the ones I am open to selling. With CreateMySign.com, the answer comes from the work it can hold. A sign business involves estimates, artwork, material choices, proofs and installations. One name can connect those moments while the founder decides how wide the service should grow.

I can see a focused studio starting with storefront lettering, then taking on reception areas and repeat orders. I can also see a team organizing a small online catalog, with the same name on the design choices and the order confirmation. Both give the founder something concrete to build toward: a sign-making business with one introduction across the whole job.

The work of changing later

The fix-it-later mindset says to upgrade the name once the business has made it. By then, changing means replacing email addresses, packaging and signage, along with the name customers already know. The desired name also has to be available when that time arrives. For a sign maker, that change reaches right into the physical world: workshop lettering, vehicle graphics, sample folders and the documents accompanying finished work.

AI makes it easier to put an early website or ordering tool into use. A usable product can be reproduced more readily; a recognizable name gives the founder a distinct identity to keep building around. That is why I consider the name while the business is taking shape. A great name won’t save a bad business. It gives the work a head start, and the founder still has to make the service worth returning to.

OnlineBusiness.com is my strategy and development studio and provides supporting context for how I approach these projects. PremiumBrands is where I bring the selected names together. My interest in CreateMySign.com is the same practical interest that guides the collection: a founder can start with one useful offer and keep the identity as the work becomes more ambitious.

If CreateMySign.com is the name you want for your business, send me a note about what you intend to make of it. If your best name is outside the collection, say which one you have in mind; PremiumBrands helps founders acquire names they have their eye on. A premium .com is a trust shortcut.
